NEED EXTRA HELP? 2 options: Full-time employee OR Outsourcing/ Subcontracting for your business

You and your business need extra help? Between full-time employees and outsourcing/ subcontracting, what will you choose for your business?

First, let me tell you a story, and please picture this with me. Five years ago, Bob started a small plumbing business, and he quickly became one of the best plumbers in town. His business even began expanding and he started hiring a couple of additional plumbers. While the business is booming, things unfortunately start to get out of his hands. Bob’s days are filled with calls from his existing clients and new clients, working in the field himself, and trying to keep all the back office of his business together. Can you feel what Bob has to go through? What do you think he should do?

  1. Slow down, only take on the small business he can handle, grow slow
  2. Get extra help to effectively manage the business’s growth as its fast-growing pace

HOW?

What I would suggest Bob and folks who are in the same situation as him to do is 2, and here is the way, from my entrepreneurial experience.

Which one will you choose: Full-time employee OR Outsourcing/ Subcontracting?

1. Hire a full-time employee?

NO, NOT a full-time employee! You can get help by bringing in support for the 20-hour work as there is. For instance, subcontracting and/or outsourcing. Moreover, outside assistance is not as expensive as you might think.

2. Why do outsourcing and/or subcontracting?

Outside assistance (like outsourcing and/or subcontracting) provide the same expertise at a lower cost than hiring a full-time employee. For instance, you can have someone manage the logistics of a project, so you or your managers can focus on your daily work responsibilities.

This also allows you to keep your same level of production as well as taking on more work. Business owners often have a desire to keep their hands in the weeds as their business grows; however, you need to focus on driving ideas creation and innovation and let others implement them on your behalf.

Please remember just to spend money in areas where you specifically need support.  

3. So…

It comes down to two things:

  1. Are there areas of your business where you don’t have expertise and are becoming overwhelmed?  
  2. Is your business at a place financially where you can afford support but not additional employees?

If you answered yes to either of these questions you should take an honest look at what resources are out there and where you might be able to bring in some support.
